Natalie Portman with the blue dress pregnancy

and six scientists walk into a bar…

Okay, so the Black Swan actress and mother-to-be probably isn’t venturing into any bars right now, but she has teamed up with Environment America and the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) to form a coalition of mothers set to reform public health.

The group of six mothers from two very different professions— acting and science— combined their knowledge of climate science and environmental health to draft a letter to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, Lisa Jackson, asking her to support more stringent standards to limit mercury pollution.

“In our most important role, as mothers, we are concerned by the myriad threats to the health of our children and children around the country posed by unsafe levels of air pollution,” the letter stated. “As you work to prepare and finalize limits on air toxics, we urge you to make these new standards as strong as possible to protect children across the country for generations to come.”

The EPA is currently in the process of drafting new rules to limit mercury and other toxic air pollution from coal-fired power plants and other industrial facilities, the hope being that this letter will urge them to adopt the strongest possible standards. It’s an issue of vital importance, as 1 in 6 women of childbearing age in the U.S. has enough mercury in their system to cause a potential fetus to develop learning disabilities and disorders if she were to become pregnant. Courtney Abrams, a global warming advocate for Environment America, said, “The women who signed this letter are among millions of Americans who want cleaner air for their families. The White House and Congress must do everything they can to protect our health by setting strong clean air standards and not caving in to dirty energy lobbyists.”
