Natalie Portman - Superman - Snow White - Thor - Gravity - The professional 2

Natalie Portman is getting a lot of buzz for her role in Black Swan, and there have been rumors that she could play Snow White. Moviehole is now reporting that Portman could become Lois Lane in the new Superman reboot. Portman was previously in the running for the role when they made Superman Returns, and with rumors of Black Swan's Darren Aronofsky being added to the short list of directors for the reboot, it seems as if Portman would be a natural for the role.

Also, asked whether or not she'd consider doing a sequel to "Leon The Professional" - the 1994 film that kickstarted her career - Portman said, "Luc [Besson] won't direct it himself, and so I'm only interested if he [directs]," the actress tells MTV. "I told him if he would do it himself, I would do it in two seconds. But he won't."

Natalie Portman is an actress I have admired ever since we first saw her in The Professional, all the way through to her more recent work. She's an actress of undeniable grace and talent, but the fact that she played Amidala in the Star Wars prequels seems to have set people in a certain mind about her talent. I always felt that was just a matter of poor chemistry between her and Jake Lloyd and then Hayden Christensen, and she's proven her talent since in films like Closer, V For Vendetta and Brothers. That being said, I would be there with bells on if she and Besson signed up for a second Professional. Besson is very particular about the films he directs though, and I think he prefers to guide as a producer than get behind the camera. So alas, we probably won't see that.

I also think that the Lois Lane rumors are just that, rumors. This is simply because Portman is connected to Aronofsky who is now in the running for the Superman gig. Add in the fact that Warner wanted Portman for Lois in Superman Returns, and you have an easily conjectured scenario. There are two big reasons that I doubt this. The first is that they did want Portman for Superman Returns and it didn't happen; what has changed in the last four years that would make her want the role more? She may well be on the cusp of her first Academy Award if the Black Swan buzz is true, and I would venture to say she doesn't need the big-budget payday of Superman. The second reason is partially why she doesn't need that big payday—she's playing Jane Foster in Thor. Marvel and DC are feeling the pain in the Green Lantern/Deadpool scheduling fiasco, and if Portman is needed for sequels or the like, that would create another similar situation. So I don't see it happening. We can dream though; she'd be perfect for the role.
