Para contar historias románticas relacionadas con la "Gran Manzana", se han reunido trabajos de directores conocidos como Fatih Akin, Shekhar Kapur, Joshua Marston, Mira Nair, o Brett Ratner, pero también un segmento que firma la actriz israelí Natalie Portman, en su primera incursión tras la cámara, que califica de "gran oportunidad" ya que le daba la ventaja de probar suerte en un formato más o menos "ligero" como es el corto, sin las limitaciones del mismo...
"La oportunidad -explica la princesa Amidala de la saga galáctica- se presentaba ventajosa, para tratar de dirigir un corto en una estructura muy singular que tiene su público. Actualmente, hay demasiados cortos que parecen quedar relegados a la oscuridad. Me encanta el concepto de "Paris, je t’aime" y de "New York, I love you" porque ofrecen una vía muy abierta para que artistas muy diferentes puedan aportar sus primeras impresiones sobre una ciudad desde varias posiciones de ventaja, todo historias de amor".Portman eligió una -escrita por ella misma- que se desarrolla en Central Park (cada realizador ha situado la suya en una parte concreta de la ciudad de los rascacielos). Allí, en una tarde soleada en la fuente del parque, una niña blanca (Taylor Geare) juega con su atento "niñero" negro (el bailarín cubano Carlos Acosta), pero cuando el día se acaba y el "niñero" devuelve la niña a su madre (Jacinda Barrett), éste evidencia en un arrebato de pasión que las apariencias superficiales no son siempre lo que parecen.
La protagonista de cintas como "Beautiful girls", "V de Vendetta / V de venganza", "La guerra de las galaxias", o "Closer", ya había participado como actriz en "Paris, te amo" (en el corto de Tom Tykwer), y ahora volvió a ser requerida para la versión neoyorquina como actriz, en el que realizó Mira Nair, pero además -de acuerdo con el productor de la saga, Emmanuel Benbihy- se propuso para asumir la dirección de otro propio.
Benbihy explica que se impresionó mucho ante el guión que le presentó Portman: "Es una guionista maravillosa. Sus personajes estaban muy desarrollados y la historia es totalmente dulce y emotiva".
Pero no todo fue una camino de rosas para el corto de Natalie en Central Park. No contaron con la meteorología adversa, ya que su historia se desarrollaba al aire libre en su totalidad, y al hecho de contar con una niña en el elenco y un actor sin experiencia (Acosta) se sumaron cambios radicales en el tiempo y la luz ambiente. "Hubo muchos problemas, pero de todos los desafíos, el más importante fue el tiempo meteorológico: ¡cambió cuarenta veces en tan sólo dos días de rodaje! A mi director de fotografía, Jean-Louis, le daban ataques al corazón cada tres minutos debido a ello. Pero nuestro reparto, incluyendo a Carlos, que nunca antes había actuado profesionalmente, Jacinda, que se presentó inmediatamente, desde Australia, y Taylor, que tiene seis años, estuvo perfecta, inventiva y auténtica; contribuyeron a que la lucha con el clima fuera mucho menos aterradora".
