El trauma fue tal que la actriz llegó a autolesionarse durante una pelea posterior con su madre. Cuando Natalie aceptó el pequeño papel en la película de Michael Mann no sabía donde se estaba metiendo. Tenía sólo 14 años y la muerte de su personaje le afectó profundamente.
"Lo que sientes en tu vida afecta a tu manera de actuar y lo que actúas influye inevitablemente en lo que sientes en tu vida", ha declarado la actriz al diario 'Los Angeles Times'. "Cuando hice 'Heat' tenía sólo 14 años e interpretaba a una chica que moría. Un año después, me peleé con mi madre y me corté a mi misma. No lo había hecho antes y nunca lo hice después, pero creo que ver mis muñecas sangrando en una película definitivamente afectó a mi psyqué", añade.
Actualmente Natalie, con una corta, pero exitosa carrera a sus 28 años, afirma que le encantaría ponerse detrás de la cámara y dirigir sus propias películas. Sin embargo, reconoce que siempre ha sentido miedo de que a la gente no le gustase su trabajo y que dirigir le resulta igual de terrorífico.
"Me encantaría dirigir. El miedo es intrínseco a todo lo que hace una persona creativa. Estás constantemente exponiéndote a ti mismo a que te pongan verde. Si pienso en ello demasiado, me quedo paralizada. Prefiero crear".
