The secrets of Natalie Portman in Black Swan
I'll admit it… I'm a tech nerd. I love the way technology and performance are increasingly combined for an end result these days. But I am also a huge fan of performances where an actor pushes themselves to a physical extreme in pursuit of a transformation that no computer could accomplish. http://nataliaportman.blogspot.com/
One of the defining performances I saw as a young film fan growing up was Robert De Niro's in "Raging Bull." I studied that film, looking at the way De Niro took himself from lean, polished, chiseled physical perfection to this bloated, ruined bag of fat, and it stuck with me because I couldn't imagine that being the same person. Since then, we've seen other actors who have pushed themselves to extremes in order to create striking images and give life to stunning characters.
Christian Bale practically built his early career on his ability to waste away to almost nothing, and if you saw Matt Damon in one of his early roles in "Courage Under Fire," what he did to himself in the film actually hurt him. One of the reasons I would consider Michael Fassbender one of the most promising actors to emerge in the last few years is because of his harrowing work in "Hunger." It's dangerous to push your body to extremes in either direction, which is one of the reasons we can't look away when we're watching it.
With "Black Swan," Natalie Portman had to learn to do something convincingly on camera that people train their whole lives to do, and even with the training she had in childhood, she still ended up pushing herself further than I think she bargained for, training for a full year for the film. We discussed that and many other things when we sat down for this extended interview at the W Hotel in Hollywood a few weekends ago.
In person, Portman is stunning, which is to be expected, but before we rolled the cameras, I was struck by just how funny and sharp she was. I'm excited to see her show up in the positively deranged "Your Highness" next year, and we talk about that a bit too in the interview.
"Black Swan" is now playing in limited release and will roll out in more cities throughout the month.

The actress is now the face of Miss Dior Cherie, one of Dior’s many tantalizing scents.
Natalie Portman was bestowed quite the honor earlier this week. Her face is now the face of Miss Dior Cherie, one of Dior’s many tantalizing scents.
Accepting this honor of course comes with accepting Dior and what the fashion house stands for, which if you dig through past collections, and even the most recent, you’ll find fur, leather, feathers, wool animal enzymes -- cruelty. Now most starlets would be perfectly fine with that, not batting a lash, unless the photographer asked them to that is. But we wouldn’t expect a young actress like Portman to fall in line, even if Dior went out of its way designing her ‘cruelty-free’ footwear.
See, Portman grew up a vegetarian and in 2009 she joined the vegan ranks after reading Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals. Before Hollywood knew it, the sweet little actress was advocating for animal rights. Portman even penned a column for The Huffington Post. Here’s a few lines to give you an idea where the newly veganized advocate stood on the issue:
Jonathan Safran Foer's book Eating Animals changed me from a twenty-year vegetarian to a vegan activist. I've always been shy about being critical of others' choices because I hate when people do that to me.
But what Foer most bravely details is how eating animal pollutes not only our backyards, but also our beliefs. He reminds us that our food is symbolic of what we believe in, and that eating is how we demonstrate to ourselves and to others our beliefs: Catholics take communion -- in which food and drink represent body and blood. Jews use salty water on Passover to remind them of the slaves' bitter tears. And on Thanksgiving, Americans use succotash and slaughter to tell our own creation myth -- how the Pilgrims learned from Native Americans to harvest this land and make it their own.
And as we use food to impart our beliefs to our children, the point from which Foer lifts off, what stories do we want to tell our children through their food?
Now, does this only work for food? Because, the last I heard fashion has this way of being symbolic, and often, what covers the body uncovers the soul. Suffice to say, there are vegans who not only shun fur, leather, wool and feathers, but they also shun brands that while they offer cotton, acrylic and spandex garments funnel millions of dollars into the slaughtering of cows, foxes, rabbits, etc. because their soul feels it’s wrong to support such a machine.
So what story does Portman want to tell through that magazine advertisement featuring her pretty face next to a bottle of perfume that most likely includes animal ingredients and most definitely produced by a fashion house that loves its fur?

http://nataliaportman.blogspot.com/

Fasion 2011 expect the unexpected Natalie Portman the woman of the 2011 year
- On her diet: "I swear, I eat . . . I consume my own weight in hummus every day. I cook a lot, and I even do vegan baking. I like pleasure, I like joy. I'd never get to the point where I would starve or injure myself like Nina does. I'm the opposite—when I'm hungry, I eat, and I always make sure I'm eating something delicious. I'm tough on myself in terms of the standards I want to live up to, but that's also part of my pleasure: knowing you are being your fullest self. Being your fullest self is a lot of work."
- On Black Swan sex scenes: "Lesbian scenes, sex scenes, they're all over the place! But because it's me, people are shocked. I see the value of a good-girl persona—it's so easy to subvert it!"
- On college: "I gained my freshman fifteen or 20 and had superdepressed moments. That Cambridge winter is tough. It was important to know how to go through that and how to get myself out of it. You start learning how to ask your friends or professionals for help, or go to mentors."
To see more pictures and read what Natalie has to say about making female comedies and her career so far, just read more.
- On her production company: "We're very into female comedies; there just aren't enough. We're trying to go for that guy-movie tone, like Judd Apatow's movies, or The Hangover but with women—who are generally not allowed to be beautiful and funny, and certainly not vulgar. There's a difference between being in a bra and underpants as an object on a men's-magazine cover and playing yourself—a woman with desires and needs who loves and laughs with her friends—in a bra and underpants. You become an object if you simply put it out there. Most movies are made by men, it's totally natural that they're going to present their worldview, so we're trying to find more women who are writers and directors who are expressing their worldview. Did you see Tiny Furniture? Lena Dunham wrote, directed, and starred in it; she's 23, and it is just amazing. She walks around in her underwear for the whole movie; it's harsh. She's the subject, she's not the object, and it's beautiful—that's the kind of thing we need more of."
- On her career: "I try not to read reviews or anything about me. It's totally natural to be interested, but it's completely damaging. Over the almost 20 years I've been working, I've been up, I've been down, I've been in, I've been out. Just getting to do the work is the privilege. I always feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. The one thing you have control over is having a great experience by doing your work fully."

The look of Natalie Portman
http://nataliaportman.blogspot.com/
It takes from his earliest years stuck in the world of entertainment, so maybe your taste has been refined over many years surrounded by lights and glamor. However, his personal style has remained impervious to the siren song of Hollywood and now has one of the most interesting aesthetic Star System: Natalie Portman.
Natalie Portman was just 12 when he debuted in the film world with the movie "Leon the Professional" and from there your sweet face with big eyes has not disappeared from the big screen.
In his personal life claiming to be vegetarian and not drinking or using drugs or alcohol and has lent his image in support of various humanitarian campaigns and actions of NGOs. His style of dress when he is discreet and on red carpets but dare a little more with the colors or shapes, when the cameras are able to capture it in its most casuals, is always dressed simply and without fanfare and always, always correct.
Imitating his style will not cost you as much as with other actresses more prone to major couture dresses and one of the names to keep in mind when looking for models like the actress is to Rodarte, one of its brands header. Possibly cost you a bit more to get is that special aura seems to surround the actress and always makes hogging all eyes beyond where it goes.

Natalie Portman graces the January 2011 cover spread for Vogue
http://nataliaportman.blogspot.com/
Here’s what the 29-year-old Black Swan actress shared:
On what she orders during her interview: A vegetarian at home and a vegan when out, she orders a thoroughly eccentric meal: field greens followed by a soft pretzel with mustard, and an elderflower spritzer. She defends herself: “I swear, I eat. I ate a bagel an hour ago. I consume my own weight in hummus every day. I cook a lot, and I even do vegan baking.”
On being in favor of vulgar: “There’s a difference between being in a bra and underpants as an object on a men’s-magazine cover and playing yourself—a woman with desires and needs who loves and laughs with her friends—in a bra and underpants. You become an object if you simply put it out there. Did you see Tiny Furniture? Lena Dunham wrote, directed, and starred in it; she’s 23, and it is just amazing. She walks around in her underwear for the whole movie; it’s harsh. She’s the subject, she’s not the object, and it’s beautiful—that’s the kind of thing we need more of.”

UPDATE: Nat picked up a Golden Globe nomination — Best Actress (Drama) for Black Swan. She shared, “I’m very honored by the HFPA nomination, and to be included in this group of actresses I so admire. The experience of filming Black Swan with [director] Darren Aronofsky and our incredible crew is already the most fulfilling experience of my career. The audience appreciation of the film is only furthering how grateful and proud I am to be part of the film.”

film Love And Other Impossible Pursuits, starring and produced by Natalie Portman.
Earlier today I received an e-mail from a reader, asking if I knew anything about IFC picking up the rights to Don Roos’ film Love And Other Impossible Pursuits, starring and produced by Natalie Portman. This film hasn’t been on my radar in a while, as it played at Toronoto in 2009.
I couldn’t find any references to this transaction having occurred, and from what I could gather on IMDB and the various movie news sites, no one was talking about this happening. Then I checked my RSS feeds.
Earlier today IFC Films quietly announced a film called “The Other Woman” and wouldn’t you know it, it’s the exact description of Love And Other Impossible Pursuits! In the description for The Other Woman, they even reference that it’s an adaptation of the Ayalet Waldman novel. I can’t seem to find any reason why they’d change the title, other than the fact that it’s a mouthful. http://nataliaportman.blogspot.com/
