Unhappy homecoming. Maguire and Portman as walking, talking casualties of war.

Shattered lives

Featuring a premise that borders on maudlin, Brothers, director Jim Sheridan's adaptation of Susanne Bier's 2004 Danish film of the same title, achieves something akin to realism: It's obviously a construct but gets right to the heart of the matter. Marketed as a kind of hybrid love triangle/anti-war story, the film is pure agit-prop exposé, portraying the psychic trauma experienced by combat veterans and their families.
